you already have a very expensive, good quality monitor, I would only get the Samsung if you can get a very good price for yours. The 240Hz for me are more of a nuissance, because I only see it as an excuse to charge premium for a feature I'm never going to have a computer powerful enough to use (I don't even get close to the 144hz of the LG in most demanding games, even old ones like The Witcher).Īll that said. If you also do graphics, I'd check if the monitor has a mode with accurate colors. I am a programmer as well and chose the LG preciselly because the Samsung HG70 (and pretty much all older VAs) had text clarity issues, but those problems seem to have been fixed by the new Odyssey. If by game developer you mean coder, I see no issue at all. I personally like the curve, I only would see a problem if you want to use it as a cinema screen to watch movies with more people (colors would shift with different angles and the curve would be wasted and pointless) or maybe if you are using design programs such as CAD (straight lines might not appear straight, but I haven't tested how much of an issue this really is). The HDR in the Samsung promises to be at least better (still not good but better, the Samsung has better contrast and very basic local dimming zones). The only game where I noticed a difference was Horizon Zero Dawn and it was only that, different, not necessarily better. What prevented me from getting the previous VA Samsung over the IPS LG were the issues of the Samsung such as text clarity, ghosting etc, which seem to be, at least in part, fixed by the Odyssey. And even in colourful games, despite the worse color reproduction of the VAs, the contrast makes the images look better (at least in good VAs with decent colors). Very dark games like Last of Us are particularly annoying to play, since half your screen will be grayish and there will be no depth to the image. but as soon it's nightime or you go into a cave, things start looking washed out, specially if your monitor is placed in a dark environment. Just to give an example of how it feels, play the Witcher during (ingame) daytime and, being a very colourful game, it would look mindblowing and rich due to IPS great color reproduction. Essentially pretty much everything will look better, with more depth and more fun. but it's ultimately unimpressive due to the low contrast unless you play exclusively supercolourful games.įor movies and immerssive games (specially games with darker areas, such as Last of Us) I'd take a VA monitor with good contrast anytime. Sure the LG lacks most of the flaws most other monitors suffer. Those three are just the ones I've focused on after some basic level research using Google.Īs an owner of the 27GL850, I would initially choose the Samsung with my eyes closed, though I would still be really careful and wait for reviews (specially knowing how the previous Samsung HG70 was plagued with issues). If you have a suggestion for a different 1440p panel with high refresh rate please provide a link / information. I just want a 16:9 aspect ratio display to game / stream on if I decide to get into that. I already have an x35p 3440 x 1440 VA panel that I currently use.

This is a display that would be pulling double duty as I am a game developer that works from home. I need the thoughts of more educated individuals when it comes to monitors. Unsure of how I'd adapt to the curve on the G7īuying the 27GL83A-B would save me $400 CAD, the 27GL850 slightly less but in reality only a handful of games will run at that FPS HDR on any of the three is fairly meaningless given the amount of dimming zones and etcĢ40Hz on the G7 is nice. The LG monitors are well reviewed / loved for what they are Just figured I'd ask here for opinions based off what I do know. There are clearly pros and cons for each of the three monitors, and we only know so much about the G7 right now because reviews are fairly limited at the moment.
